Wash, Dry & Fold vs DIY: Which Is Cheaper in Hamilton?

Most Hamilton households assume the home washing machine is the cheap option. Once you factor in power, water, detergent and — most importantly — your time, the maths gets a lot more interesting.

The hidden cost of a home load

• Power: ~$0.40–$0.80 per wash + dry cycle in NZ (heat-pump dryer) or up to $1.50 for a vented dryer
• Water: ~$0.30 per load on Hamilton City Council water charges
• Detergent & softener: ~$0.50–$1.00 per load
• Wear and tear on a $1,500 machine over ~2,000 cycles
• Your time: sorting, loading, switching, hanging, folding — easily 60–90 minutes per load

What wash, dry & fold actually costs

At The Laundry Studio, wash, dry & fold starts from $22 a bag with no minimum order. A typical family bag of 8kg comes back washed and dried for $44 (Large bag, 7–10kg), plus $0.98/kg if you add folding — and you don't lose your Saturday morning to it.

When DIY still wins
